Lauren Carlson, a senior in Environmental Horticulture, took first place in the Landscape Illinois design competition, becoming the first UW-Platteville student to win the award. She was tasked with completely re-designing the landscape of a given property.
“I received a plot survey of the land, along with the customer’s wants and needs, and was granted creative freedom to develop the design,” Carlson shared.
Carlson's work included the creation of hardscapes such as patios, outdoor kitchens and porches, all while ensuring both aesthetic appeal and functional use. A key element of her designs was selecting the appropriate plants, for which she carefully considered factors such as plant size, soil type, light requirements, water needs, color and bloom time to choose the most suitable species and cultivars.
"We are very proud of Lauren's accomplishments,” said Dr. Michael Compton, professor of environmental horticulture with the School of Agriculture. “Her design is very professional and demonstrates that she knows how to apply what she has learned. Lauren is very talented, and her potential is unlimited. We are glad that she has chosen to further develop her talents as part of the UW-Platteville Environmental Horticulture program."
Carlson has competed in the event for the last four years and credits her expertise in part to what she’s learned during her time on campus.
“I greatly enjoyed this competition and learned so much by doing,” said Carlson. “Having a strong background in agriculture from my classes at UW-Platteville, I pursued opportunities like the ones Landscape Illinois offered that prepare me for my future."
Carlson is planning to work as a landscape designer after graduation.
