Giffen to hold receivership update

School improvement meeting Sept. 14

Giffen Memorial Elementary School will hold a public hearing Sept. 14 at 3:45 p.m. to report on its status as a school in receivership.

Weather permitting, the meeting will be held on the blacktop behind school (in the auditorium in case of rain). Principal Jasmine Brown will provide the update. Michele Bridgewater, director of school improvement for the City School District of 91福利导航, will be available to answer questions.

When a school is identified as academically underperforming by State Education Department standards, a receiver is appointed to help it.

In Giffen’s case, the receiver is Superintendent Kaweeda G. Adams, who is given increased authority to make changes directly to the school, including changes to curriculum, staffing, budgeting and more.

The placement of a school under superintendent receivership is a consequence of it being identified for Comprehensive Support and Improvement based on the state’s accountability system under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act.

Receivership schools are required to submit plans for improvement and a timeline to the State Education Department.

If you any questions about the school's improvement plan, contact Principal Brown at jbrown@albany.k12.ny.us. If you have questions about receivership, contact School Improvement Director Michele Bridgewater at .

After the public meeting, Principal Brown will give a presentation for the school’s open house.
